I don't know if Harold and I are to blame, but I'm sure the constant threads on X-Marks are probably helping to drive up interest (and prices). I'm honestly a bit surprised that there wasn't more of a market for them in the past.
***.
I'd be willing to bet that virtually all of these cantles being sold on eBay are going to XMTS members or people who are influenced by what goes on in this community. It's actually a pretty cool little subculture thing that's built up over the last year or two with these MoD cantles. And as rare as these things are (not to mention their awesome styling and potential for repurposing), it's easy to see how the demand for them can shoot up, causing the prices to go up accordingly.
I agree, I'm surprised they didn't "catch on" like this before now! But perhaps that's also an interesting phenomenon worth thinking about. I've only been here about 3 years, but I've seen a dramatic change in the styles and attitudes of members here. As knowledge increases and enthusiastic members look for a nice balance between the historical and traditional look, we start to see a sort of 'revival' of old styles that wouldn't have happened just a few years ago. Could we call it a sort of *gasp* fashion trend?

Last night as I was dozing off, a silly image popped into my head of dozens of X-Markers all secretly trying to snipe each other on eBay for these- Secret bidding wars, all between ourselves.

There are certainly worse things that could happen in/to the world of kilted fashion than a good solid look to past styles. ![Wink](http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_wink.gif)

A fine observation, Tobus. There are many on this thread alone who dressed very differently just two or three years ago. They are now paying more attention to the old pics and to the words of those who have worn Highland dress all their lives. There seems to be less anger at tradition and less intent on changing what has been for something that can be nothing more than a trend. At the same time there is an understanding that small differences are reflections of personal style in a fashion form that is alive and well; that its acceptance beyond the Scottish Highlands -- in its traditional form -- has been good for it.

And now we've reached nearly $300US.
AND it's missing one of the studs on the front face!

I was in the running on that one. It ended at 5 pounds over my max bid. Someone apparently wanted it just a bit more than I did.
Congrats to whoever won it. Even though it was missing a stud, it was a Mk. I model with the pull-button opening system and non-brass studs, which I was really hoping to add to my collection. I had a plan for making a new stud to replace the old one. But oh well, it's someone else's project now!
