That's rather what I was thinking. Unless someone wants to cut a dash and impress the hat-check girl.

If you get it in a dark blue (navy), dark enough to appear black(ish) at night and not at all black in the daytime, you might be able to pull off the dual-purpose thing. Otherwise, I don't really think there are that many options that would be all that "appropriate" for both formal evening and daywear.
Perhaps you just need to ask yourself what your priority is: day or evening... and go from there. A black or midnight (very dark) blue Inverness/overcoat/opera cape in the daytime (other than perhaps at a funeral) would look strange to me, but I really couldn't tell you if it would be more strange than a (light) tweed coat at night paired with formal evening (black/white-tie).
I know a piper with a navy blue Inverness cape, that looks perfectly suitable for (formal) daywear, and it would not look out of place in a formal evening setting- as it would be very nearly black under artificial lighting. This would be my recommendation.
Cheers!
Michael

Well, the trigger has been pulled.
The folks at the Celtic Croft contacted the maker and they had navy blue tweed on hand.
The order is placed and now the wait begins.

If it is cold and I am wearing the kilt, I wear the same coat. It is almost the same colour as my blue velvet doublet, but I don't get all fussy-matchy-matchy about staying warm!
PS. I'm more apt to match topcoats with shoe colour. If I'm drssed up, wearing black shoes, I wear the aforesaid navy/black cashmere coat; if I'm wearing brown shoes, chances are I'll be wearing a tweed topcoat, or a camel coat, duffle coat, Barbour etc.

The color question has kept me from diving into deeper debt with a wool Inverness Cape...now I have the inside dope and its gonna be a lot more difficult to resist...

An Inverness Cape in patterned tweed is always going to remind me of
I like the idea of a Navy Blue tweed, or Charcoal Grey tweed.

Hand your coat in at the door! I can think of more than one big house in Scotland where keeping on a coat, or Inverness is almost essential for ones wellbeing---whilst at a function, or worse still, spending a night there--------heaven forbid that there might be more than one night---------in this circumstance the colour matters not, but its heat retaining abilities certainly do!
