It appears we're all sort of right/wrong. From USAKilt's site.

Well no, they are not '8 yard' kilts. Based on my experience the Semi Trad yardage varies a little depending on size, tartan sett, and pleating style etc.. the couple of my kilts that I've measured, waist size 43, pleated to the sett, have had about 5.8 to just over 6 yards in them. I'd assume skinny fellows might average less, bigger more etc.. I do not own one, but based on what I've seen here the Scotweb 5 yard wool seems to be limited to 5 yards, which depending on the sett and size sometimes makes for some creative pleating options, like pleating to different lines etc..

    Here's a review I did for a Semi-Trad a while back; http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/f...-review-60943/

I would save up the extra $80 - $100 and get a 5-yd wool kilt from USA Kilts.

Barring that, I would go with the semi-trad PV from USA Kilts and avoid any international entanglements/fees. My brother has a USA Casual in the Holyrood tartan and loves it. It makes a gorgeous kilt.

Great pictures, by the way. Thanks for sharing them with us. Love your wife's tartan skirt. You look beautiful/handsome.
I changed my signature. The old one was too ridiculous.

I have a Burnett's & Struth 4 yard wool casual (you can also get a 5 yarder in wool) that was shipped very quickly with no hassle from Canada to California. See http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/f252/ for reviews and photos.

The Semi trads are made with 5.5 to 7 yards of cloth (a bit ends up as buckles, belt loops and fringe... just like how an 8 yard kilt is typically 7.5 yards or so if you stretch it out or a 5 yarder is about 4.5 to 4.75 yards stretched out). The length of cloth used depends on the size of the individual, size of the sett, whether done to sett or stripe, etc. We make them with 1" pleats and they do have a decent swing for a kilt with less than 8 yards in non wool cloth (but I may be a bit biased).

If you have any questions about construction of our 5 yarders or our Seim Traditional kilts (or customs or shipping charges or lack thereof), please let me know and I'll be happy to chime in.

Our input doesn't come cheap. It can only be recompensed with a shot of yours and your wife's new kilts.
