My Grandad told us once about torpedoing a Germansubmarine, and then sailing in closer to capture the survivors. He said that adefining moment in his life was when he was helping these cold, wet, frightenedenemy sailors onto his ship, and he realized they were all scared young menlike him. He and the other Brits gathered their cigarette and liquor rationstogether and passed them out to the German sailors. Some Germans spoke a bit ofenglish, and some Brits spoke a bit of german, and they spent enough timetogether to talk about how similar their lives were, and how sad they were tobe fighting in a war. Grandad never liked talking much about his experiences,so when he told us that story it really made an impact on me. I have neverlooked at the 'enemy' as being faceless since then. Thank you for posting thenews story, I'll be looking for that book at the library tomorrow!
