Jacket sizing 36 v 38

About jacket sizing, I had at one time three Scottish-made Argyll jackets labelled respectively 46L, 48L, and 50. All were exactly the same size.

I had also at that time another Scottish-made Argyll jacket labelled 50 which was enormous, at least two sizes larger than the other 50.

Always best to try the jacket on.

Nick, I'd say you may have some luck on eBay with vintage jackets, many of which are in smaller sizes and rather awesome looking! I've seen a lot of smaller tweed Argyll's go for a pittance on eBay because many people today seem to be larger than they were two generations ago, but THCD hasn't changed...

As others have mentioned, it is best to go by the measurements of a jacket, rather than the posted size. If possible, measure a jacket that fits you really well and use that as your guide. Keep in mind that the feel of a size is not just the chest, but also the shoulders and the arms.

As Blake Roth mentioned, it is easier to take in a large jacket, than it is to let out a smaller one. Sometimes it isn't too bad to let out plain cuffs an inch, but letting out the chest is a much more serious rebuild. If the jacket has gauntlet cuffs, however, make sure they are the right length because I hear they are a pain to adjust.

If Nick is planning to wear this jacket while playing the pipes, is there any sizing advice a piper can offer? It seems like one might want an extra inch in the chest and the arms so that the playing position doesn't feel too snug...

I've been keeping an eye on eBay, Colin. I actually bought one according to other measurements I have with another jacket. It seems vintage is the way to go for me until I can afford a bespoke jacket later on. I'm a lot smaller than most guys, even my 36 motorcycle jacket and the jacket I took measurements from is a bit big on me. Which I'm okay with, it does allow for some movement.
