Given your choices, and if all else is equal, I would simply select the material you prefer, or you think you will prefer, and go with that. IMHO you can't go wrong either way. Good luck on your decision.
Thanks for that point of clarification. Given that, I'd agree to get the material you prefer (which for me is wool).

If you want to made the best marmalade, you do not choose one of the 700 commercially available varieties (nor one of the 1,200 endangered and preserved ones) of apple. No, you choose an orange.
And when Mom wants to make one of her world famous apple pies, we know what fruit she chooses.
So if anyone says that one or the other kilt is better - well, in that place, on that day, at that time it might have been. But 10 miles down the road, tomorrow, at midnight - it could be a different question.

Excellent point.
It really does come down to what you want to do with the kilt. I would never say one type is "better" than the other. I prefer wool to PV, but that is my preference. I would, however, suggest some styles are better suited to some things than others.

I appreciate all the input. It has helped me think it through.

I agree with Chas, and will echo many of the comments already posted. I own one of each of the two kilts (a USAK trad and B&S casual) and I love them both. Neither are the same as an eight yard traditional wool kilt, but then they don't aspire to be. As Chas says, you will have to compromise. I think you'll be very happy whatever your decision.

I can't speak for the wool casual, but I'm extremely fond of my PV semi-trad. The lighter fabric definitely doesn't have the swing of heavy wool, but it still looks (and feels) darned good, and it's easy to care for. It's comfortable and casual enough for pub night, but formal enough for the wedding that I expect to wear it to later this year.
With that said, as others before me have noted, no kilt is perfect for all situations, so go with whichever you feel most drawn to. Any well made kilt is a good kilt!

I think I am finally getting this through my head. I need to rephrase it in my mind. Which is better for the FIRST kilt, and if I think in those terms I can plan better and have more range in the end.
Sounds like the pv is the way to go for the first one then. I think when I get a wool one I will want to get a fly plaid and such (so same bolt of cloth), and that will take more money. This will be a good one for my purposes and tell me how much I enjoy it.
Thank you again to all!

I have a shadow tartan black 5 yard PV and a 4 yard tartan wool box pleat. Both are very servicable. I also have two 7-8 yard wool kilts. I like the feel and drape of the wool much better than the PV which seems a bit light to me. PV is also cooler but I don't think it breathes as well as wool. But that's what I think. PV is is washable, though! Let us know where it all shakes out for you.

Where did you get the Black Shadow PV kilt? I wasn't aware that tartan was done in PV.
