buckle for a belted plaid

On the belts I've made, and looking at factory made stuff, I try and keep the strap width as wide as possible for the buckle, so like a smidgeon smaller.

i know this is an older thread. but i was wondering what was the more common metal used on highland buckle from this time to even the 15-16th c? would it be brass or iron, or bronze?
