    Help with identifying several tartans

As often happens to my wife and I, we've been given some ladies skirts in a variety of tartans. I can't identify them and suspect that they may be fashion tartans, but I like to pass on true tartans if I can. If you can identify any of these as belonging to a clan etc I'd be very appreciative.

The first looks like Royal Stuart to me. The fourth/sixth looks like Black Stewart. The fifth is Grey Stewart. All of these are my opinion... I mean what if these similar to those tartans I mentioned, but different by one line/color?

#2 looks to me to a very close cousin of the Royal Stewart in #1. It looks like it has a thin red stripe added and a thin blue one missing.

Agree with all that's been said. Nos 2 and 3 are also both Royal Stewart variants produced by some manufacturer or other. No 2 appears to be plain weave.

I can't find any official reference to a Grey Stewart tartan. I'm interested because I have a flannel shirt that looks identical to this tartan (from memory, anyway), and it would be nice to know if it's an official tartan or just a 'bumbee' tartan.

There are a couple Stewart variants that look close to this one, but it's missing certain pieces. For example, it's similar to the Hay-Stewart tartan but it doesn't have the red lines in the grey field. It's also similar to the Dress Stewart tartan, but with grey instead of white (and possibly the deletion of the outside blue lines). It also looks like it could be a variant of Black Stewart, with the black field changed to grey, and missing the solo blue stripes.

But I really can't pin it down as any specific tartan, and can't find Grey Stewart in any register. Is this just an informal name?

Tobus, the Grey Stewart is a fashion tartan. It's typically found in lighter weights (10 or 11 ounce); however, I did have a heavy-weight kilt in my collection at one time made from this tartan. Marton Mills has a similar design called Grey Stewart in their 16 ounce wool range, but it has purple stripes in it, too, that look a little pink. MM charges a small fee per yard, because it's a copyrighted tartan. Other than that, I don't know much about it. I'd love to have a kilt in that tartan again. My other one had mothing, unfortunately.

Agree, fashion tartan. Marton Mills, Pendleton, and LLBean all have variants. I have an LLBean flannel shirt in it.

Couldn't find it in the SRT as such. But did find this, another variant: Stuart/Stewart Authentic Grey http://www.tartanregister.gov.uk/tar....aspx?ref=3994
