Scottish Pirates?

Capt William Kidd was Scottish. The kilt is a very inconvenient garment aboard ship. Rum was issued to enlisted men in Highland regiments in the 18C and 19C, as it was to sailors.

Not to mention that great scene in Tunes of Glory where Col. Sinclair is standing a round to the bandsmen in the lounge bar and a majority of them order rum -- "Aye, it's our hobby sir!".
