It just might work for him. I bought an inexpensive kilt a few months ago off ebay, the inexpensive price making the sizing gamble one I was willing to make. The undersized kilt vs. my normal sizing (28 vs. 31) was only evident when I buckled the hip strap--the apron's line "scalloped" a bit. I removed the strap and everything looks fine. I have an abnormally large butt, so your fella may not even have that issue. Definitely worth trying out.

Tough call. You'll only know if it fits after he tries it on. I do think, though, that he'll be fine. One problem might be that the under apron might be too short to wrap around. I have one like that, and the under apron tends to drop down. Not too big a deal, as my wife just tacked it up. Good luck!

Thank you all for your answers.
I´ll take your advice and will give the kilt to him for christmas. And if it doesn´t fit i´ll sell it.
Some of you wrote about leavin the basting thread in. The kilt doesn´t have that. I bught it from a webbshop, http://www.clanncelt.co.uk/ They had a really good price on it.
But I hope one day I have the money to buy him a made to measure kilt.
