What's in a 'Camel'?
In looking for that Tartan that suits my aesthetics perfectly,,, I have come across a term that I have been unable to get an exact definition on. I would like to know what the actual difference between a "normal" tartan and a 'Camel' tartan is? It might have been covered in another discussion, but if so I have been unable to locate it.
Thank you in advance
Dan

Like much of tartan nomenclature, this simple refers to a color variation of a tartan -- often a fashion variation. So Thompson Camel is the same sett as the usual Thompson tartan, but with the main color rendered in "camel" (a light tan color). Stewart camel is another example.
Example: here is the standard (red) Thompson/MacTavish tartan.
Here is the Camel variation.

I think this tartan variation was designed to mimic the Balmoral tartan, which is of course restricted to the British Royal family. Another good example is the Burberry tartan, which the company use to line their (very expensive) coats.
The Kilt is my delight !

Doesn't have anything to do with the Balmoral tartan, which is woven in different shades of grey.

Go to Scotweb's tartan search engine and put "camel" in for search and you will find a total of ten different tartans listed as being woven in "camel" color variants and various weights, Thompson and Stewart being the only stock tartans, 7 other custom weaves, and 1 restricted tartan:
