With all due respect, I have to agree with Peter on this basis: that a tartan is a nameplate and a clan identifier. Think "uniform." Uniformity is not something to be despised, rather to be appreciated since it is a form of clear communication.
Your tartan is what your tartan is. Love it. Don't try to "tame" it to become something that suits your preferences. Think how your beloved would responded if you tried to do that to him/her. If it doesn't match something, who cares? It says who you are, not what colours you like. It's your identity, not your taste that you're wearing.
Be proud; wear your identity with pride. It's a good thing to be you!
