I've heard mention of Deerstalker hats being somewhat traditional. I like my Tilley hat.

I am looking at the possibility of wearing an outback slouch or similar for good coverage and an oilskin leather or canvas would have a nice look on top of it. My opinion but, with a good outdoor button down shirt and boots. A nice outdoor look indeed.

I have come to the conclusion that the proper hat for kilted wear is in the same vein as the proper shirt or shoes to wear with one. It matters little, or not at all so long as they are appropriate for the occasion. Family picnic at the beach kilt attire...desert camo boonie hat, logo t-shirt, sandals or comfortable brogues.
I'm sure to stir something up here, LOL.

If I may chime in here, practicality seems to be the most traditional thing. I wear a boonie with my kilt on hot summer days. I wear a winter hat on cold days.
I would like Ghillie hat. When I order my next kilt I might get one.
I even wear (don't read thos bit, Jock) a tweed flatcap, too, on moderate days.
Either way, I agree with the rabble. Be practical and be safe.
Does it really get warm in Southern England? I have never visited before.

I have several brimmed hats that I wear with a kilt. The panama is my favorite summertime wear. For cool weather, I like a tweed deerstalker or a fedora.

I wear my Tilley in the hot intense summer sun. Maybe not traditional, but it does wonders for the sun. My mother has had a few spots removed, and working outdoors as a surveyor I've some to appriciate the functionality of a nice brimmed hat.
