Anyway, I did try.
Seriously, I suggest your next novel is set in 1812 - the year of my great grandfather's birth. The aftermath of Culloden was still there, Scots were going all over the world in the army, the clearances were just starting etc. Do have a look at David Stuart of Garth's correspondence in the link I mentioned earlier - in many ways boring but gives a very good picture of Highland life at that time. You could make your hero a romantic version of him.

Hmmmm..... That does sound intriguing. And I did look over the link. It's always good to have primary sources like that. BTW Alan is a family name in my family. A middle name. My grandfather, father and my son all have Alan as their middle name.
