Cigar box guitars were made and played by early American blues musicians. They stared through slave culture. They made them from whatever materials they had, mainly broom handles and the wire that held the straw on the broom.
There are a lot of people these days rediscovering these instruments, I am one of them. They can be made for next to nothing depending on what materials you use. (Wood broom handle, wire, box, a few bolts)
If you google or you tube cigar box guitars you'll definitely hear and see some cool stuff

That's Cool !! My Uncle was a champion guitar and fiddle player. He won the NW Hoedown fiddle championship 4 or 5 years in a row. I remember him making guitars and fiddles out of the old Cedar cigar boxes.
