I doubt anyone will have a heart attack, much less raise an eyebrow, if they notice your buttons. If you like them, wear them.

Seeing Sandy's exquisite button reminded of something that happened when I was a herald. I had a client come in to the office of arms who gave explicit instructions as to the design of his crest. Now normally heralds try to acquiesce to the whims of a client -- after all, it's their coat of arms -- but in this instance the requested crest was just plain dreadful. Still no amount of discussion could persuade him to adopt something -- anything! -- else, and the ghastly crest was duly plopped on top of his helmet.

A few months later the letters patent were signed and sealed and the client came by the office to collect them. The minute he walked through the door it was obvious as to why he had been so insistent over having that particularly ugly crest. Three huge antique brass livery buttons -- probably from the overcoat of a doorman at some long gone hotel -- adorned the front of his blazer, each emblazoned with the client's crest... Ah, the joys of instant ancestry (at least in places like Boca Raton, Florida!).

So it turns out that finding distinctive buttons in the variety of sizes I require is proving challenging. I don't want to break the bank but I don't want "cheap" looking buttons either. I may end up having to go with the standard square buttons found on Prince Charlie outfits as they are easy to obtain in more than one size. I need 6 large buttons (7/8th - 1") and 8 smaller ones for the epaulettes and cuffs (I'll post pictures of the cuffs, they are not standard and the big ones found on gauntlet or crail style cuffs won't work.). If anyone has seen reasonable looking celtic round buttons in various sizes that don't cost a fortune, send me the link!
