New Tank!! Dewar tartan.

I have just received my new 'tank' - the Dewar:



I have never seen a pleat like this one, its a sort of a box pleat and a knife pleat. It is a very deep pleat too - measuring about 4 inches; that said, I know almost nothing about pleating! I got this kilt from the mighty eebs for £60, and am super happy with it. It is not quite what I was looking fro, but I think it will suffice for one of the kilts i will need for the coming year!

I am wearing it to the University here, and am wearing it with a royal blue shirt, and green 80's Canadian Patrol Jacket. I love this look, and the boots are fantastically comfortable: I walked home this evening from the philosophy cafe and it was -15 - but I was still plenty warm enough with a black Shemagh and the gloves and tam you see in the backpack!

Nice looking kilt. The tartan is very similar to the Gordon, with the blue and green colors reversed.

Your kilt is box pleated. It's just made with a greater amount of cloth than a four yard box pleated kilt (the norm c. 1790-1850) and so one side of the pleat will be deeper than the other. This is what some people call a "box-kinfe pleat" or "a box pleat with a knife pleat on the side" but really it's just a box pleat with one side of the pleat deeper than the other one. There have been threads on here discussing it before.

Here are some photos I took to illustrate this effect for one of those threads. The first is a four yard box pleated kilt, with the pleats being roughly the same depth in both directions.


Next is a five yard box pleated kilt. Note the pleats in one direction are slightly deeper than those running the other direction, creating some overlap.


And here is a six yard box pleated kilt. Notice even more of an overlap inside the pleats.


Both the tartans for the five and six yard kilts have rather large sett repeats, meaning the pleats were a bit wider than they would be for an average tartan. Here are some photos of another six yard box pleated kilt I took while still in progress (so the pleats had not been pressed yet). This tartan had a more average sett repeat (about 7" if I recall). You can see how shallow the pleats are in one direction.


And how deep they run in the other.


So you have a very fine box pleated kilt there, made with perhaps around 7 yards of cloth or so. Wear it with pride!

Very nice tartan and pleating. I really like the purple in it, although it gets washed out in the other photos.

I am going to be picky on one thing: the jacket is not a "patrol jacket". Patrols were navy blue (almost black) with no lapels. They button right up to the collar and then had a standup type collar. What you are wearing is the green standard issue dress jacket which has been cut-away to wear with a kilt. That being said, it's a smashing outfit. IT is hidden under your belt but I like the way the military tailors made a little "notch" at the bottom of the buttons for the cut away.

This lower picture is very similar to the depth of the pleats. I think it will be about 7 yards or so. It does fit very well - I was surprised, as it has a slightly greater overall length than my made-to-measure Roxburgh (24" vs 23"). I manage to sneak it up my belly a bit - and it sits nicely, and the seat seems to be in the right place at that too! I am quite lucky. I have a ex-mil blackwatch heavyweight coming - I doubt that will fit quite so well.

I really like this box pleat, but sitting every day in class and at other events means that the pleats seem to get creased a bit more than the knife of my Roxburgh. I think the material is a bit rougher too - it seems like it is made from a much coarser wool -- which I actually think I prefer!

It reminds me much of the material that your 'painting' kilt seems to be made from - a less refined or modern wool, somehow. But I actually like that - I think it is warmer, for one thing!

I think it is my photo; it is a light royal blue - which is very close to purple, but not quite there. It is strange you mention the purple, as I also really like the purple tinge that it seems to have..... I may, if I ever have any money, get Matt to get me one woven with a purple in it.
