Color of garter ties

My basic rules, (ok more like guidelines) for hose/flash/tartan are simple; I try to coordinate the hose to a minor color or stripe in the set, and the flashes to a more major color. Matchy? Sure, but it's not a hard and fast rule, just a place to start.
Since I had a lot of this stuff out in the last two days, I took a couple of quick photos with the XMarks tartan;


The grey hose with lovat or dark blue flash have been my 'go-to' with our tartan. The blue hose with gold flash looks great too, but so far I've reserved that combo for formalwear.


Lovat hose with gold flash is great for casual or daywear, as is the charcoal hose and blue flash. And the charcoal and blue works fine for formalwear too.
I don't have any grey colored flashes but I'd think they would look good with any of my darker hose options.

The tartan flashes look good with just about any combo

I usually go with gold garters (from Scottish Tartan Museum) with my XMarks kilt, or White.
The white stripe in the XMarks kilt is eyecatching in my opinion. For hose, I go with blue or gray.

One of the really neat things about the X Marks tartan is that the yellow line is actually woven with two different shades of yellow threads, one bright and one more muted. So whether you go for the yellow or the mustard ties, either will coordinate well with the yellow of the tartan.

If you are looking for something eye-catching and flashy, go for the bright yellow. If you are after a more subtle or toned-down look, go for mustard. Either will look just fine.

Thanks everyone for your thoughts, advice and examples. This is exactly what I wanted to know. After some deliberation, I believe I will go with the mustard garter ties. The yellow looks a little bright to my eyes.

The thing is that I like being matchy-matchy sometimes. Especially if I am dressing for a more formal event. Thank you all again and when I make my choice, there will be pictures.
