I'm kind of torn on this issue. My MacDonald of Clanranald Modern kilt is in the tartan that my father referred to as "our tartan". Like others mentioned, it was all over our home. He had this tartan on his favourite waistcoat, neckties, on a set of decorative bagpipes that hung on our wall, coffee mugs etc... We are Clanranalds from Cape Breton and the family came from Lewis, Scotland. I feel a great degree of pride wearing it. The 8 yard, knife pleated (to the set) tank was beautifully hand sewn from 16 oz Lochcarron cloth by my brother (xman here) for our brother's wedding so it means quite a lot to me.




On the other hand, my heavy weight (20 oz) box pleat MacDonald is my first kilt and the thing just fits like a glove. It's got less yardage so the weight is more evenly distributed, and even though it's over 100 years old, it looks as good as new. I quite like the crisp look of the heavy weight apron and find the thing very comfortable to wear, and I wore it to my highschool prom, wore it with my military uniform, played hundreds of gigs in it and am quite attached to it. Sadly, if I sit in it too much, I have to have the pleats re-basted and that gets expensive.





In the end, I'd have to say the Clanranald Modern by a nose, simply because my brother made it and it's in the best possible tartan option for me and it is very well made. But I wouldn't part with my military weight kilt either
