J. Higgins value kilt
Has anyone had any experience with the J. Higgins Value kilt. Right now I have A USAKilt Semi-Traditional which I really love. And a USAKilt casual which I am liking more and more. The casual is my "wear instead of shorts" but someone can't just own one pair of shorts for the summer. The wife suggested today that I need at least 5 more kilts I'm thinking at least 6.

What do they mean by "value"?

Looks like PV material kilts, anything from 4 to 8 yards ranging from US$90-150

And now the truth comes out why the wife said I need more kilts. She said if I'm going to be wearing them all the time she doesn't want to keep seeing the same three. So I should get more. So she ordered two PV casual kilts today from Heritage of Scotland. They should be ok from knocking about the yard and gardening in and going to the pub. And she's buying so I won't complain. I'm toying with the Idea of purchasing "The Art of kiltmaking" and trying to make my own 5 yard wool box pleat.

I have been mulling this very thing over, too.

Bren and Richrail ,
If you decide to make your own kilt , " The Art of Kiltmaking " by Barb T is most excellent !!

Ah, I don't view that as "value", when I can get an ex-hire 8-yard handsewn heavyweight all-wool kilt in the same price range.

It's a fantastic book for sure, which I've read cover to cover, but I would highly recommend taking a kiltmaking class from one of the authors if possible.
I took a class from Elsie and it was fantastic! Making my own kilt had long been one of my "bucket list" things and I've finally done it.

I have one of these in my clan tartan. It is about four yards of lightweight pv fabric, that has the three buckles. Its good for what its worth-use in very high temperatures with low to no wind. It tends to be my go to kilt in high summer around here (June through some of September) because it certainly would not do in windy autumn or frozen winter. It has lasted me for more than four years, no stains, tears, loose threads and survived falls, mud and toddler accidents of various types. You will not be disappointed.

Even if you don't plan on making your own kilt, I would still recommend ordering a copy of the book. I did, to better understand what went into my kilts, and how they were made. Beyond the mechanics of the garment, there's lots of other good information in there, too.
