Choice of footwear

For knocking about, I have an old pair of Rocky chukkas that refuse to die after nearly 20 years of use. Regular casual—it's a pair of Timberline boat shoes.

Footwear and hats seem to be the two biggest bugbears of the "what goes with a kilt?" categories. My response to the both questions is basically to wear whatever you might if you were not wearing the kilt.

I never really got the boots and slouched hose part of the 'casual uniform' that so many conform to. Honestly, most of my most casual kilt wearing is done in 90 degree(f) + heat, boots and kilt hose are not comfy for me. I own hiking boots, but I pretty much only use them for hiking, outdoor work or other off the path activities. But hey, if you're comfy with them go ahead! About the only time I put on a boot on otherwise is for ice skating!

This is my 'casual wear' most of the time that I'm out and about, at the pub, running errands or grabbing a bite etc. Docs or other 'sturdy' low-quarter shoes and a golf or other short-sleeve shirt.



But then I've got what I'll call 'Very casual', sneakers and a t-shirt at a summer outdoor concert...


Or a hot night at the sci-fi con!

Some accessories optional, your mileage may vary...

I forgot to mention: Doc Martens both Oxfords and a pair DM chukka boots. I also have a pair of old-school regular brown wingtips and a pair of black Ghillie Brogues.

Failing all that, I personally recommend some stiletto heels -- Louboutins or Jimmy Choos, but only if you got the legs for it! ;-)

I have these that I like because the can run a range of events. Brogue boots! These are the Red Wing brogue rangers.



I also wear doc martens oxfords sometimes, and keen sandals when it's very hot.

All of the things you guys wear look a lot better with the kilt than my gleaming white trainers. Thing is, I don't own any boots or shoes of any sort, except for the black dress shoes I need for work, those white trainers, and kilt-specific shoes. It's because I wear zorries year-round, due to our warm weather.

Usually, my black lace-up Keens. I've worn combat boots before, though (but was never sure if they were a Kilt Kops no-no). I have the urge to wear my combat boots with fishnets, but I'm still wary of forgoing the kilt hose for fear it'll just look like a plaid skirt rather than a kilt. I also have tall combat boots and after reading Nathan's post maybe I'll see how they look with the hose-- they may be too tall not to cover them completely. If for really formal, I might put on my wingtips, but they're pretty narrow and I'm not sure the kilt hose would fit into them. (I used to have a pair of black monk-straps I used, but they wore out.)

Zardoz-- I recognize those waitress' outfits. Is the Tilted Kilt a chain, or do you just happen to have a place down there where they dress similarly? (I mourned the fact that none of the Utilikilted waiters seemed anywhere near my age and therefore I could not ogle...)
