You may be interested to know that Aberchalder is situated on the very Eastern end and Southern side of Loch Oich(between Loch Ness and Loch Lochy) , in the Great Glen. At the other end of Loch Oich(Western end and Northern side) lies Invergarry which was a major stronghold of the MacDonalds(in the assorted spellings) based at Glengarry Castle which was burnt down in 1746.There is a hotel there these days situated in the "Big House" that was built there sometime later in more peaceful times.

A fellow clansman....woot.
It is no joy without Clan Donald,
It is no strength to be without them;
The best race in the round world;
To them belongs every goodly man
In the van of Clan Donald
Learning was commanded
And in the rear were
Service and honour and self respect,
Brilliant pillars of green Alba,
A race the hardiest that received baptism;
A race who won fight in every land,
Hawks of Islay for valour,
A race without arrogance, without injustice,
Who seized naught save spoil of war;
Whose nobles were men of spirit,
And whose common men were most steadfast,
It is no joy without Clan Donald |

Here it is in Gaidhlig, Charlie:
Ni h-eibhneas gan Chlainn Domhnaill,
ni comhnairt bheith 'na n-eagmhais;
an chlann do b'lhearr san gcruinne
gur dhiobh gach duine ceatach
I dtosach Clainne Domhnaill
Do bhi foghlaim 'ga faithneadh
Agus do bhi 'na ndeireadh
Feidhm is eineach is naire
Uaithne ana Alban uaine,
clann as cruaidhe ghabh bhaisteadh;
'ga roibh treas gacha tire,
Seabhaig lie ar ghaisgeadh,
Clann gan uabhar gan eadcair,
nar ghabh acht eadail chogaidh;
'gar mheanmnach daoine uaisle,
Is agar bhuaine bodaigh,
Ni h-eibhneas gan Chlainn Domhnaill
Jock: That is interesting. There is certainly no shortage of MacDonalds (various spellings) here in Canada... It will be interesting to explore those areas of Scotland someday. Although my direct MacDonald ancestors emigrated from Lewis, it seems like I could be almost anywhere in Western Scotland and be exploring former MacDonald territory...

Nathan, great thread! I admit that I was one of the 9,999, but that has now been remedied. I'd never heard that Stan Rogers song before either, so thanks!
