That's true - mine is obviously a renaissance fair costume :-)

That is what I want to avoid at all costs. I work our clan tent at regional games and do a lot of history talks and wish to be as authentic as possible.

    They suggest the following lengths:

    The Great Kilt (Feileadh-Mhor)
60 inches wide by 4 and 1/2 yards (The "whole nine yards" of olden days when fabric widths were typically 30 inches.)
60 inches wide by 4 yards - up to 34 inch waist
60 inches wide by 5 yards - up to 44 inch waist
60 inches wide by 6 yards - up to 50 inch waist
Thank you so very much for all the information and the sites! You have been a tremendous help.

I wish I knew how to contact this guy. His outfit is awesome and appears to be fairly authentic. He's a piper at the Michigan Renaissance Festival.

I've made shoes from leather and kilt hose from tartan like his. The shoes didn't work out for me. I need to wear orthotics and these obviously have zero arch support.

To be completely honest, then, as an acqiauntence and a gentleman, given that you do NOT want it to look like a costume I (personally) would just wear my usual kilt.
However, given that it's an example of living history, I would look for a specific era and nail that down. Stick to that era. Great kilts were worn from about 1550-1746(ish). That's a LONG span of time and trends to draw from.
Let me ask you: which era interests you the most?

Your approach might be different, though. I have no idea what is normally expected at your usual events.

Kiltedrennie, good stuff. Totally fitting there since everything is a bit anachronistic at Ren Fairs and it's more about having a good time than educating the masses.

The "A Year in a Kilt" guy did a pretty good job on his more modern interpretation.
