Yes, and those "yearnings" should be directed at non-clan tartans.
It's a little like the distinction between serial monogamy and promiscuity, isn't it?
Quite. Although I fail to see where the "serial" applies.

Why would anyone want to wear somebody else's name tag?

Very interesting to read all these posts. Pretty straight forward for me though. I'm a Robertson so the only tartan I'll ever wear is Robertson. MacKellar and Brodie feature next in the family tree and I'm proud of that heritage, but if I pitched up to a family "do" in one of those tartans I'd get some very strange looks!

Somehow the Swiss national seems to be restricted
But I can tell you that I'll never wear the Swiss Red tartan because I am not and don't want to be part of that Group.
Sometimes even if you are entitled to wear something you maybe shouldn't.
I'm still searching for a tartan I like and have a connection to. And if I can't find one I'd rather have a new tartan than what looks to me like the dishcloth we have at home. (I don't want to be disrespectful I just don't like that tartan)

I think my need to buy something because it's "on sale" may be directly related to the fact I am a girl.......
But I do have a Nova Scotia Tartan I need to get made into a kilted skirt, even bought a Tam in NS tartan...
I do have a thrift store kilt because $2 is a good freaking deal.

That I totally understand! Anything that is tartan, wool and not moth eaten is coming home with me if it's only a few bucks!

Even if it's moth-eaten.
Jessie, Nova Scotia tartan is beautiful. I love it.
