It is 0600 BST (British Summer Time) and with a large mug of coffee to hand I am listening to "Nimrod" played by the Band of HM Royal Marines-----and then I discovered this thread. Good timing I would say and for me, a very apt piece of music to remember and contemplate.

As a comparative newcomer to X-marks, I did not know Turpin. However, I felt I wanted to be part of this tribute. I played a lament "'s ann aig Port Taigh na h-Airigh-" (It was at the port of the house of the Sheiling) and the dance "Am Mathan Dubh (The Black Bear) on the organ at 9 a.m. BST (That's GMT + 1 hour). These are arrangements for the organ of traditional Scottish tunes, by Ian Major, and are taken from "Four Laments" and "Four Dances" repectively. My thoughts are with Turpin's family at this sad time.

1715 EDT: not being a piper I had to resort to recorded music, but that gave me a wonderful array from which to choose.

I chose "Cock o' the North" for the Gordons to whom Turp was proudly affiliated. And then I found Stuart McCallum playing "The Sleeping Tune" which is a slow air but not so mournful as to bring tears. Then I ended up with "Caber Feigh" because that is the most rousing tune I know of. Makes me want to take up a sword and charge into battle or do something equally noble but crazy!

    Turp would approve, I think.

"The Dark Isle" and "Liberton Boys." Just now in fact.
