It looks great with that kilt, DK. I have a couple kilts in muted color schemes that I'm thinking it will go just as well with.

I've had a muskrat, full-head sporran since the late 1970s. I don't know who made it and I bought it from a long-gone Scottish shop in London, Ontario owned by the late bass drummer Duncan Gibson, then a bandmate of mine. I love it and it's usually a hit whenever I wear it, but I've agreed to pipe next month at a celebration of life for one of this area's most well-known and activist animal lovers. I think perhaps I'd better wear just a plain leather sporran for that gig. Looking into the beady eyes of a dead muskrat adorning my kilt might just be too much for such an animal-loving group to bear.

But staring at the hide of a cow doesn't send the same message? Is the cordura nylon Night Stalker available in a dress version?

I suppose for a few of the most radical in the bunch it might send the same message. Still, unlike muskrats, cows are not generally slaughtered primarily for their skin. For many animal lovers, fur, especially fur with a face, conjures up images of the much-maligned fur trade, cruel leg traps, innocent creatures killed to satisfy human vanity, etc., etc., and rouses stronger passions than plain old leather. I'll feel safer with leather on this occasion. I've never had a problem when wearing my full-head muskrat sporran, which I do whenever I can, but I have received the odd hostile comment about my pure white sealskin dress sporran. The great Canadian seal hunt seems to rouse even stronger passions than the regular fur trade. At least no one has thrown red paint on me yet, though.

I won't need a dress sporran for this gig since I'll be wearing a tweed argyll jacket and vest. I had thought of getting a synthetic Nightstalker for this occasion, but they appear to be out of stock.
