Don't know who invented that Jacobite look, but it's described in 'So You're Going to Wear the Kilt' so it's been 'documented' since the 70's. It's interesting to me that while the look is so disdained, (and I personally wouldn't wear one of those shirts outside renfaire) it shows up all the time in pictures of various events, from games to weddings, from Scotland.
My earliest memory of Jacobite shirts was seeing The Corries wear them which would have been the 70's.
