LOL I just realized that I typed "fornal" event in the thread title...not exactly a great way to introduce myself to the community! In any event, I will likely go bare headed to be safe, but was curious as to the accepted norms.

We were in St. Andrews the other day, it is not somewhere that we visit often, but as always, the place never fails to impress. You have your answer in the posts above and whilst bareheaded is the usual choice, if the weather happens to be as as grim on the day, as it was a few days ago, then a balmoral would be a wise consideration! Have fun.

I was just going to say that, Jock! The "foul weather rule" is something to follow: dress for the weather!

So long as you remember that the "weather" is outdoors.

I remember that about 20 years ago weather was pretty much indoors in our house. And many parts of our houses headgear were on the car infront of it.
Hope you'll have nice weather .

I just used my mod powers to correct the title - you can go back and edit out your observation - if you want to hide the evidence...

Thank you, Anne. I think I will leave it as a testament for the ages...
And thank you all for the sound advice!

If the weather is cool, an umbrella will not keep your head warm. I would wear a balmoral and remove it upon entering the church or any other building. (Seeing men sitting at a table eating with their ball caps on riles me no end. Speaks of poor upbringing, bad manners, ignorance, or some combination of the three. But then I am an old curmudgeon. \) I have found that if my head is warm, the rest of me is, too. And vice versa.
Also, you can purchase very good umbrellas now that have the top open and covered with another smaller umbrella to allow the wind to get out without turning the beast inside out. I have a couple that have worked well so far. Find one where they sell good quality umbrellas or at the local golf shop.
Finally, there is the matter of what to do with either--bonnet or umbrella--once you're there. That may or may not present a problem, but it is something to consider. You can stuff a balmoral under your sporran strap, but an umbrella . . . well, best to have one you can roll up and use as a walking stick.
