Thanks guys for all the encouragement. We do have a lot of celtic heritage in this area and that is why it shocked me so much.

What I have found out is that wearing a kilt is really no big deal and most people do not notice or give you a positive feedback. There are always the stares and laughter from teenage girls, teenage boys seem to like it. Once in a while I get a "nice skirt" from some guy, like two weeks ago from a guy in a van.

You are so right about rednecks being more tolerant or at least circumspect. I have been a Buddhist monk for 19 years and can count on one hand the untoward reactions or remarks I have gotten in the South, especially in the rural South, about wearing robes. However, northern cities are a very different story.

    Just registered for this site.

don't know how I missed this site in the past, but i am glad to be here now. To Ep and all my other brothers in the kilt I say howdy.

I have been to many non-celtic gatherings in my kilt and have always had positive experiences. I attend fallen officer memorial services in uniform wearing my family tartan and have fit right in with the piper playing "Amazing Grace" and "Going Home."

I have to agree with those of you who have mentioned the reactions given by the ladies. They appreciate a man confident in his masculinity. And I have a patent and old answer to those ladies who always ask,"What's worn under your kilt?" I say to them,"There is nothing worn under my kilt Lass, it's all in perfectly good working order. Thanks for asking!"

Enjoy the summer festivals and flaunt it if you got it. (Your kilt that is)

Hey Ep, I'm glad to hear you're not discouraged from wearing your kilt. Like the other guys say the good comments outweigh the bad, unfortunatly the bad seem to stick in your head a while longer. I got the "nice skirt" from a couple of drunk fishermen trying to dock their 14' boat at a riverside restaurant last summer. We had already tied up and I ended up taking a line from them before they smashed into something. It turned out to be more funny than anything else. To be fair I was wearing one of my sport kilts and if you're not at a sporting event like a kilt run they look as much like a skirt as they do a kilt.
I'm just trying to be the person my dog thinks I am.

After a number of years of buying into that pseudo-logic, I've decided that it's probably bunk. I figure, if someone makes a rude comment or whistles, then that's his or her problem, not my problem. Whatever. If I want to wear a kilt, I'll wear a kilt, and the rest of the folks can deal with it, or ignore me.

Now there ARE cases where the person is SO obnoxious that an answer is required. When someone is that obnoxious, to my mind, witty retorts are pretty useless. I usually show them my middle finger, or on the *extremely* rare occasion when it seems that more is appropriate, I'll get verbal about it. However, honestly, we're talking about 4-5 interactions in seven years of active kilt-wearing. Compare that to the literally thousands of positive interactions I've had. piffle.

Just carry on. If you want to wear a kilt, then wear a kilt.
    A HUGE !

EP, I am surprised by that response, too, given how many Scots, Irish, and the like settled there. My own grandmother, through and through of Highland Scots descent, was from near your area.

Best of luck to ya and wear it with pride.

Welcome aboard from an Englishman who is now on day 12 of continuously wearing a kilt. The response has been very very positive with only one, you are not scottish (although I have Celtic ancestory) you shouldn't wear a kilt, should I have educated him in the origins of the modern kilt, no I think he was too stupid to understand, so I used the you're wearing jeans, are you a cowboy? Retort, he then went missing from the bar for more than 20 minutes, obviously trying to find an answer.
Out and about I noticed my son getting more glances for his Mohawk than me in a kilt. Ah acceptance..
