The other option is the PV kilts from USA kilts that many of the XMarkers wear.
MuffinMan , I agree with brewerpaul , I too have one of the Stillwater economy Black Watch in wool and it fits and hangs quite well for an inexpensive kilt . I was pleasantly surprised , I do own other 8 yd traditional kilts , therefore I wasn't expecting all that much from an economy kilt , but this one surprised me .

If your son wants a Black Watch kilt , this is a good starting point . It's wool , it's not too expensive and it hangs and wears better than some of the other inexpensive options .
One thing to remember , Stillwater's kilts are 24 " in length . If your son is tall he can wear it a little lower or if he's on the shorter side , he may have to hike it up a bit . ( I guess I just stated the obvious ! )
At any rate , if he wants a Black Watch kilt , this one will give him a positive experience and it won't be hard on the pocketbook for a first kilt .

Mike, you and brewerpaul are spot on with this recommendation, I purchased one as a beater kilt and I have put it through a fair bit and washed it in the bathtub. I has come up trumps everytime. I had the kilt hemmed at the local alterations kiosk (I need a 22" length) and no-one has ever picked up that its hemmed. The tartan a bit coarser than those from the UK but can stand up to a fair bit of punishment and still come out well after a steampress. I would definately go this way for a young lad as it would better stand up to the odd cigarette butt at the pub/party than an arcylic and no fuzz balls to boot

You have to let him get what he wants, or he will not wear it at all. Let him play with the Black Watch and make it his thing, not Dad's thing. Just my 2 cents

Nthing that you should let him get what he wants... it's been a long time since I was a teenager, but that was when I first decided I'd kind of like to have a kilt (at the time I don't think Utilikilt and other non-trad kilts were even around) and I would have been super disappointed to get a solid black garment instead. I'd look at a USA Kilts casual; low-maintenance (fine for just knocking around in; teflon-coated and machine washable) but it also dresses up nicely, to a point. And it's made to measure.
As for acceptability at school, I think that a more traditional tartan kilt would actually raise fewer eyebrows than a solid-color modern kilt, both from an administrative and peer standpoint... but regardless, I'm sure your son knows he's going to stand out in any kind of kilt. Not necessarily a bad thing if he's prepared for it!
