Thanks, Simon. I never intended to "hi-jack" this thread, so apologies to Colin.

    Cheers,

I replied that I wore a traditional kilt in a non-traditional way. I'm not sure where the dividing line is (between traditional and contemporary)!! I wsear my kilt "smart casual", i.e with shirt and V-neck (sometimes a tie), but without the traditional tweed jacket.

I think that a nice shirt with or without a tie (even sans the jacket) is still considered traditional. Correct me if I am wrong.

No you are not wrong, in some circumstances it is very traditional.

Interesting question. As my Kilted evolution thread showed, I like to wear Traditional Kilts in both traditional and contemporary ways.

When I'm playing a pub with a Celtic band, I like to "modern it up" a little more with a t-shirt and army boots but I do attend events that require various levels of formality and dress my kilt up accordingly.

Basically, however I'd dress in trousers, I would wear the kilt with the same type of outfit.

Regarding the utilikilt/MUG/whatever thing. I just haven't bothered to acquire one. It seems like the traditional kilt can look good with most clothing and just looks nicer to my eye but I don't try to live kilted full time so if the kilt isn't suitable, I switch to the appropriate trousers for the given task. I do think the concept of the modern kilt is a cool one and I think they are possibly here to stay.

I'm with Nathan on this, apart from the MUGS. I'm not a big fan but I won't slam guys who like them. Then again, I do think that they are here for quite a while if not forever.

Btw, I saw an old-style Utilikilt at the market the other day. The guy totally reminded me of Ron (Riverkilt). Lol. The fellow said that it was "the most comfortable garment I own." i think that Ron has a clone out there.

I am new to kilt wearing (2 weeks and counting). I have just ordered my second kilt, which will be arriving on Tuesday. I have always liked the look of the kilt, however, as I have no Scottish/Celtic ancestry I would never wear a kilt in a traditional way (unless I was invited to a wedding in Scotland). I voted contemporary as I wear my kilt with a VERY comfortable pair of combat boots with the kilt hose folded down and a t-shirt.

I wish that I was able to go the whole 8 yards (see what I did there) and wear the full on formal dress, but in my mind it would be a tad weird, especially with my West Indian background! However, I'm a big fan of wearing waistcoats casually, and looking forward to combining that with my kilt (t-short underneath rather than a shirt).

I can't really vote here because I wear historical and traditional kilts. I've been working on acquiring the needed pieces of attire for proper THCD, but I have also been experimenting with a blend of traditional and historical methods of wear.
