Well, I've been going to sci-fi/ fantasy conventions, as well as ren faires, for a number of years, and quite a few people wear them at both places. (T'Challa, based upon your avatar and screen name, I'm betting you've been to a con or two yourself.) I also have Scottish (among other things) in my heritage, so there's a connection to that, as well. It took me awhile to pluck up to courage (and money) to get one, but I've been doing it for about 2 years now and love it. I got my second kilt a little over a month ago, and I look for almost any reason to wear a kilt somewhere, though with my work schedule, it doesn't happen as often as I'd like. I'd be lying if I told you I didn't like the attention it gets, and most of it positive.

For me, form follows function, and I wanted the comfort and freedom from unbifurcated garments. I really don't like the attention factor much, but honestly I've received complements from young people mostly, and it feels great. If you want kilts to become more popular, then encourage people of all color to wear them.

I worked in a senior position in my local Town Hall in a tourist destination town in Scotland. More than twenty years ago, my employers persuaded me to get my first kilt as I was expected to wear a kilt to certain events. At the start of 2003 I had a leg injury which put me on crutches for several weeks and unable to wear trousers so I wore the kilt to the office. The kilt went down so well with my employers, colleagues and customers that I continued to wear the kilt to the office two or three days per week after my leg healed. Eventually I retired from my profession four years ago and took on part-time driving work. If I am driving visitors from outwith Scotland I would usually wear a kilt as this is appreciated by our guests.

My family is of Scottish descent and I was named after a Scotsman,so the heritage is there for me. But that is not the only reason of course. I like the freedom of moving around in a kilt as well as the pride in my heritage. Add the looks and a be different attitude and all is good. No real reason NOT to.

I have indeed. As my kilt is still fairly new, I haven't had a chance to wear it to a convention yet. I know there's a member on here who matched his kilt with a red shirt from Star Trek (and it looked awesome). Definitely an idea I may borrow. And I agree with Geniepants, that I'd be lying if I said I didn't like the attention. That is not my main reason for wearing one though.

I've started wearing my kilt when I DJ at the weekends and I must say I stay a lot cooler behind the decks now than I did before (sweat used to be dripping off me when i was wearing jeans). Just need to make sure I don't start break dancing!

Funny, just the other day I wore my newest one (a red and green tartan called Prince of Whales) with a Star Trek redshirt with the word "Expendable" across it. Alas, no photo to share.

As a lady told me at the Avon Breast Cancer Walk, which I did kilted - I have magnificent calves.
