    Highland themed church function.

Our church has recently begun having special out reach functions on the last Sunday of each month, and this month's function was a mock prom with a Highland theme. Now most of the mens' group decided on wearing kilts, the problem was that only three of us own any. I happen to own five now with my recent perchases, but only two are "traditional" the others are two belted plaids and a box pleat philabeg. The others have a kinguissie pleated kilt in a red and white nonclan tartan and a Irish heritage traditional. The result was me loanong out all but one of the kilts that I wasn't wearing, and that's because one of the men couldn't make it. The resulting looks ranged from renfair (the box pleated with a shirt and vest), to moderatly successful (a great kilt with a black wool waist coat) to hideous (a belted plaid with a black half button down shirt). It was like seeing the history of the kilt all in one room though since most of the major transitions were present (though not always correctly worn). It was an interesting time and I hope to have pics soon.

Sounds like you have the models all lined up for a great "history of the kilt" lecture!

Very interesting, Didymous; hopefully, your out reach included , encouraging some of your congregation to add the kilt to their wardrobe. Witnessing in a kilt should be a good way to open doors, engaging the traditional thinker as well as the 'hip'.

My wife and I used to belong to the Highland Presbyterian Church in New Castle, PA before we moved to Delaware. There were a few members who had kilts (mostly Masonic, Scottish Rite, of which my father & father-in-law were a members) but they only came out on Reformation Sunday and weddings. I truly wish that I had been more in touch with my Scottish heritage at that time in my life; perhaps I would have become kilted sooner.

    Looking forward to the pictures.
