Great advice from all posts here. Back on the topic of Scotland, Edinburgh is a great city for walking around and if you decide to leave the highlands for another time, can I suggest a day trip to Glasgow? You could leave the car since public transport links are pretty good, allowing for a small refreshment or three.
My advice would be to take a trip on the PS Waverley, the worlds last ocean-going paddle steamer, which will allow you to see some very beautiful parts of the west coast, with music and a good bit of craic thrown in and will have you back in time to pay a visit to the west end including the infamous "Teuchter Triangle" of pubs.
Be sure to wear your kilt!
Regards
Fitz
