I would just wear it when the mood stuck and get on with my day

You know what? You don't have to do anything - for as long as you want. It's yours and in your possession, and you can do as you like.
Btw, I admire your sense of ethics in this whole situation.

Wear it to Harpenden this year so that we can give you a professional opinion ...

Wow! I didn't think The Palace took these things so seriously these days. What IS their opinion of 'subjects' wearing The Royal Stewart tartan? as there is so much controvesy surrounding this one. If I did wear a 'Royal' tartan it would be 'Prince Charles Edward Stuart' (as there is less red in it) and House of Edgar do a beautiful version in their heavyweight range, but now I'm not so sure
The Kilt is my delight !

Considering that most hire companies here in the UK offer the Royal Stewart as one of their options, I don't expect there's any restriction on wearing it - I seem to recall the blurb when I hired mine last year saying permission had been granted for anyone to wear it but don't quote me on it.

That's torn it! You can't now plead ignorance--------as they march you off to the Tower!

Agreed! Unless I'm missing something here, why go to all of the bother of finding out if it was restricted if you were not going to follow the outcome of your research? Surely, this was not just an academic effort on your part. I would disagree with many in that wearing it is NOT one of your options. Nor, in my opinion, would be selling it without full disclosure to any prospective buyer.
There are lots of tartans to choose from without treading on others property rights.

So, as a British subject, living in England, I do not have Royal approval to wear it.
Re-reading the old thread I think that considering that our local Tartan Historian figheadair said, that it was definitively not the King George VI tartan, the disappointing part of the reply is, that Buckingham Palace didn't check your research.
With all the statements against it being the KGVI on here I would expect that they would at least say, that they had checked your added documentation but still think it is the restricted tartan. "No further comment" to me sounds like we don't care and don't want to spend time on this.
I would sell it.
