The story I was told is slightly different. I was told that a seaman would wear one gold earring if he could afford it to pay the ferry boatman to row him across the River Styx. He would wear 2 silver earrings if he couldn't afford the gold one for the same reason.
As I couldn't afford the gold or silver earrings I wore 3 stainless steel ones in my left ear in hopes that the ferry boatman would accept them in place of the gold or silver ones.
