That, I think, is what many people miss when discussing anything not-quite-mainstream. "Do you think you're cool?" or "you're just trying to get attention*." Well, no, I'm just wearing what I like, as you are. It's just that mine's different from yours. I'd actually rather people leave me alone, thanks. I don't especially wish to discuss the length of my hair, my jewelry, my kilt hose, etc., even if they ARE different from what people are used to seeing. (And unless you're my employer or I'm at your event, my appearance is really not up for discussion or debate, thanks. I probably don't like what you're wearing, either, but it's really not my problem nor my business.)

*And as it seems this is a common reaction from the public to seeing someone wearing a kilt, you'd think people around here would not trot it out to refer to body mods...

I was lead to believe that the wearing of earrings was started by sailors in the dim distant past. The story goes that when they could afford it they purchased a gold earring. This was in case they were shipwrecked in some foreign land they had the gold to buy their fare home. True or not a good story.

Ring wearer on "dress" occasions only and no tats.

The story I was told is slightly different. I was told that a seaman would wear one gold earring if he could afford it to pay the ferry boatman to row him across the River Styx. He would wear 2 silver earrings if he couldn't afford the gold one for the same reason.
As I couldn't afford the gold or silver earrings I wore 3 stainless steel ones in my left ear in hopes that the ferry boatman would accept them in place of the gold or silver ones.

My father who was a sailor was told the gold earing was an old tradition by sailors to pay for burial at sea. Also guarantying that the sailmaker would put the last stitch through their septum to make sure they were indeed dead.
3 stainless steel earing only lets you hang on the transom
I only have one so all i get is thrown into the river :crap:

I have had earrings since I was 16 , had 1/2 inch plugs (Not gauges) for the last 15 years . I did it because I like the jewelry , not to fit in or be cool , only because I like it .
That's all the reason you need for anything .
Also - don't worry about social stigma .
If you have the rare person who won't do business or or hire you because your jewelry does not meet their standards then they will really freak out when they find out you like kilts !

Aye! I'll try to make this long story short: When my grandson (whom we raised) decided he wanted to join the Navy, he had to have his ears surgically "corrected." He had had ear plugs as a rock band member. Not my cup of tea, but he has always been a really good kid. Just before he went off for training duty, he suggested that I might lighten up a bit (actually it was more like pull the pole out of my a**). I agreed to let my beard and hair grow out while he was in the Navy and I had my left ear pierced where I wore a gold shackle earring (very nautical "tradition"). A year later and a lot more hair and beard, I got the other ear pierced so I could also wear "port and starboard (red left, green right) earrings." Now he has decided to make the Navy his career and is a candidate for a commission -- and heaven knows how long my hair and beard may become. ' Can't even see my earrings anymore! Oh yes, no one seems to notice or care, although everyone notices the kilt!

Oy! From the way you spin it...Almighty and Dread Cthulhu :cthulhusmiley: will definitely be feasting splendidly on my bones for my varied and plentiful choice of ear adornment...between the silver, gold, stainless steel, and titanium (as well as occasionally amber, bone, horn and various semi-precious stones)...hope I am tasty is all I can say
I'm only off-kilter when my kilt is off.

"I'll take a Scot on the rocks. *wink* " <--- by far the best pick-up line I have ever heard
