I have had earrings since I was 16 , had 1/2 inch plugs (Not gauges) for the last 15 years . I did it because I like the jewelry , not to fit in or be cool , only because I like it .
That's all the reason you need for anything .
Also - don't worry about social stigma .
If you have the rare person who won't do business or or hire you because your jewelry does not meet their standards then they will really freak out when they find out you like kilts !
