    Can anyone identify this Tartan?

I was given this Kilt as a gift however, the giver had no clue as to what the Tartan represents. Can anyone identify this Tartan? Thank you for your time, ~Khane Click image for larger version.

Actually, considering the smaller red of the ground this appears more the 'Prince Charles Edward Stuart' - a precursor to the Royal Stuart. The PCE is included in W & A Simth's publication, as well the Scot Adie collection, available at:

    http://resources.scottishtartans.org/

There you will be able to compare the differences in setts for the PCE and the RS. One of our esteemed experts will chime in, I'm quite sure. However, cursory study of the samples shows the following distinction of the PCE v. the RS:
    1. reduced red square
    2. Usually an enlarged thread count for the blue border stripe
    3. a difference in thread count for the white over stripe than the yellow

Despite these, in the samples bound for the Scot Adie collection, his RS includes the enlarged blue thread count and the enlarged white thread count, as well the enlarged red ground square. Essentially, Scot Adie was producing PCE and RS virtually the same with the RS having a significantly increased red ground square.

In the 1819 KPB, author Peter Elsea MacDonald makes two specific mentions to the reduction of the thread count for the blue border stripe or the proportional enlargement of the red ground square being indicative of the RS over the PCE. Infact, the sample image you provide most closely matches one of the settings for No.73 or Prince Charles Edward Stuart, 24 reed, 12 half-setts; pg.72 The 1819 Key Pattern Book, Peter E. MacDonald. Even then, there are some differences in your thread counts.

Again, I beg an actual expert straightens me out.

    Thank you, Sir.
Although I consider myself a good student, I am a student just the same.
