Plenty to see and do in Ayrshire.
Burns Cottage and the Burns Centre at Alloway near Ayr. Ayr itself is a pleasant town with a fine seafront and beach, theatre, shops etc. The Paddle Steamer Waverley provides day excursions from Ayr Harbour during July and August.
Lots of old castles and abbeys to explore if that takes your fancy.
South of Ayr is a very pleasant coastline and the resort of Girvan with its excellent beach.
North of Ayr are the seaside towns of Prestwick, Troon, Irvine, Stevenston and Saltcoats each with their own distinctive character. Near Stevenston and Saltcoats is Ardrossan Harbour from which is a one hour ferry crossing to Bordick on the Island of Arran "Scotland in Miniature" with its fertile lowlands in the south and mountainous north. My personal favourite around Stevenston/Saltcoats/Ardrossan is the ruined Kerelaw Castle, but then as a Cunningham I am biased as it was one of the historic Cunningham strongholds.
Further up the coast and still in Ayrshire you can visit Largs, famous for its battle of 1263 which is commemorated in a memorial and in a Viking Museum. From Largs is a short ferry crossing to the tranquil Isle of Cumbrae. Enjoy!
