Can this look be pulled off?

I have been wearing my kilts for a wee bit over 14 weeks straight now. While I love my kilts and balmoral look, I am sorely missing my cowboy hats. Question for the rabble.....Can this look be pulled off or is it too far beyond the pale that it borders on outrageous and does injustice to the kilt? Please, be honest.....This is me in my Spirit of Scotland tartan.

I was once told that it is important to note that you wear the kilt, it doesn't wear you. So the choice is yours. But IMHO, I'm just not feeling the hat. Sorry.

I don't like cowboy hats. But I'm a nobody to you. If you can walk into a mall and feel confident in your attire then you're pulling it off. If you can't, you need to put some headphones in and play eye of the tiger while you walk through the mall.

If that doesn't help, well then, it doesn't mean you need to change your look. Just look in the mirror and like what you see. Life is too short to care what other people think.

I don't think you look like a bum or bizarre. I wouldn't be ashamed to be seen with you. Rock your look. It's respectable and well put together. There's nothing wrong with it.

Many here will say no. Period. Many who will say that have never lived in warm climates or worked in the sun.
Many who will so opine believe the rules own you, as does your employer, per another current thread. I will never
agree there, partly explaining why I haven't had a real job since 1969. If I recall correctly, the linked thread or perhaps another contains pictures of people doing just what you are, and looking very comfortable and appropriate in their
environment. While I prefer bulldog style myself, I would have no problem standing next to you anytime. I got my
first cowboy hat in 1951 or 2, and have worn the one I have now since 1979. Haven't worn with a kilt yet, but
will if I'll be in the sun all day. Better than being burned. Certainly does not look as bad as an untucked shirt or
socks scrunched down, and many here do both. This is a country of mixtures, and a utilitarian one, and one filled with
strong-willed individualists of Scottish descent walked their own path. With no intent to offend, dress to please yourself
and your own comfort and needs. Not advising breaking rules just to break them, I'm actually fairly conservative
personally.

(edit on second thought) Many here wear Akubras and Tilleys with no reservations, and no one yelling. One wide-brimmed
hat is much like another.

I vote for no.

Maybe without the waistcoat.

There used to be school-girl uniform style in the UK, I believe called the Pinafore Dress. At first glance (before I realised that the waistcoat and kilt were separate), that is what i thought you were wearing. Not a good look for a grown man with a beard.

On the other hand, remove the waistcoat, shirt (with or without tie) and cowboy hat - that would work.

The military, at least, has never been hesitant to adapt Highland Dress to local conditions, including changing the traditional Scottish headdress for things more pragmatic

But this isn't a 'cowboy hat' you say? Well it sure was, considered to be a quite typical cowboy hat in the 19th century and early 20th century, so common and typical that it was adopted by the US and Canadian armies.

Here it is, in a late 19th century American catalogue, called a "cowboy hat" or "sombrero", or as we Americans call it today the "Montana Peak" cowboy hat, or Campaign Hat

Now in my opinion a Montana Peak hat (an authentic 19th century cowboy hat) looks better with the kilt than the modern cowboy hat with the rolled up sides (created by Hollywood in the 20th century, I suppose).

Actual cowboy hats had flat brims

Here are nice practical hats worn by a pipe band; who could argue with this?
