I am not sure that there is a definitive answer to this. So I say that whatever you are comfortable with is good.
What is good for me? When kneeling the apron should not quite touch the floor.

Top of the knee feels right to me. You'll get it right on your second kilt!

For a large waist size on a GOS (as they are known), wearing the kilt a little higher at the waist and a little longer to the hem can create an illusion of 'better' proportions.
With the circumference being further from the legs the trapping of the hem is less likely.
But as always, the way you wear your kilt is mostly a matter to debate between yourself and your mirror, with comments from the spouse should you have one, of course.

I was always taught that if you keel on the floor the hem should just touch the floor. That makes it about half way down the knee cap. Well it does on me.

I heard that this stemmed from military tailors, at the start of some conflict or other, having to measure a large influx of new soldiers and found this quicker way of doing it. They had their soldiers kneel on the floor and measured from the floor to the waist. Then they made the kilt to this measure minus one inch.
