Be careful following pictures as well - from normal 'standing up' camera angles, the kilt will appear lower on the knee than it actually is. If you look at my post here:

    http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/f...-tartan-80357/

it looks like there's not much gap between the kilt and the hose, but in reality the kilt is at the top of the knee and the hose a good inch below.

Thanks for all the replies so far. It seems that the traditional kilt wearers like the top of knee to center of kneecap. The modern utility kilt wearers seem to prefer it a little lower. Please correct me if this assumption is wrong.

I usually take a towel and look, what is good for me. At 23" the hem almost touches the floor. The Elkommando kilt was at the top edge of the scala - shorter was for boys. I am 194cm tall, long legs, small torso. I guess ya see the whole knee.

It is my understanding that if the kilt is to long (covers the knees), it indicates you are married. Kilt above the knees - unmarried. On top of the knee cap (just right) - keep 'em guessing. See:; Thompson, J. Charles (1989). So You're Going To Wear The Kilt (revised 3rd edition). Arlington VA: Heraldic Art.

I have to ask, are you being serious? I am sorry to say that your information is leading you well astray. In fact, it is yet another prime example of nonsense beig passed off as fact. Sorry.

I agree. Here's a visual example of my preferred length, keeping in mind that the very top of my kilt sits about an inch above my navel:
