Actually, the "modern" style of cowboy hat (i.e., one a wide brim that can be, and often is, rolled up on the sides) was first embodied by the "Boss of the Plains" model hat, created by a hatmaker named John B. Stetson in 1865. It was a style specifically designed for wear by men who lived and worked in the American west, and it became such a classic that the term "Stetson" is often used today to mean "cowboy hat."

I think that I'd pass on this look. I'm in Oklahoma, and so I've got all the same gear (hat) too, but I'm thinking that on my side of the coin, I'd pass on this one. No offense meant, but for me, it looks a bit (or has a feel of being) a bit "cross dresser" . A look that I'm assuming your not going for.

I decided to do it...and I did. This is a photo of me in Nashville this past Saturday. On my way the Wildhorse Saloon. The look was approved of by myself and my Mrs (we were celebrating our 23rd anniversary in Nashville). I was requested by several ladies, some in bachelorette parties, to have my photo taken with them. One of the cheeky devils actually picked me to be part of her "treasure" hunt where she had to choose a man to kiss her (on the cheek until she turned quickly and smooched me on the lips...lol). So I'm guessing the look worked a wee bit.

Well, then my friend. It would seem you "pulled it off" in spades! Not quite my look, but who can argue with a bachelorette!

Readers; "OC Richard" has hit the mark well. The 'cowboy hat' of 2013[and the one you have on] are an off shoot of the Westerns of the 1950-1960, and, of course-the Movie "Midnight Cowboy" which is why I NEVER wear that sort of hat with a kilt. I DO wear a broad brim straw hat- look at the Amish Straw Hats, same one. I also wear a fedora & an 8 panel Edwardian flatcap(Please, do not throw bangers & mash at me for writing the word 'flatcap'!) IMHO ethinic hats with the kilt can confuse the viewing publick, & give them the wrong Idea of who & what you are. Sure, you can wear what you like for a hat, even, I'd guess old Russian Commy service hat, even if you should not, but be aware the people who look at you form an opinion of a man in a kilt, by what they see on you. If you want a broadbrim felt hat, try, for example, www.crazycrow.com they have several good ones. Also, Google up Civil War Sutlers and you will find some more there. Google up "Victorian & Edwardian mens' clothes" and you will find some more. Note here, while we are on the subject of felt hats: I would also NEVER wear a Top Hat, in any colour, with a kilt!
But sure, wear what you like, and be-- like a good Boy Scout--- Prepared!

The strange sounds you may be hearing are the groans of dismay and cries of astonishment from those who wore Stetsons, and were photographed wearing them, and were buried before western movies were invented.
rmccool is correct, the "Boss of the Plains" is the original as far as is known. Photographed in this or similar hats were
many known and anonymous folk, and far-flung. Buffalo Bill wore one. Members of the Dodge City Peace Commission (but neither Earp nor Masterson). Northwest Mounted police. Worn in South Africa in the Boer War, and by the US Army in WWI. BY Boy Scouts, and Smokey the Bear. It's rumored the occasional US Marine may have seen one. Some the hats available from Crazy Crow, as recommended by Mr. Anthony, are palm versions of this classic, one built Carlsbad style, as seen in the aforesaid movies on the heads of bad guys.
Which, of course, has nothing to do with whether one cares for the combination of this style of hat with kilts. Belief systems are an intriguing subject, and like white hose would be a forever topic. As said above, while I've not done it, I have no problem with it. I believe it might have been Riverkilt who linked the article about kilts and mental health. Holding to tradition while maintaining flexibility helps one stay sane.
