Hello KT.
The only issue I have with your statements above is, I don't wear the kilt for them, I wear it for me... Whatever opinion they form doesn't really worry me. If they want clarification they can ask me. Other than that, I couldn't give a stuff!

There are no rules regarding your dress which others can impose on you, with the exception of when wearing a uniform, which you are not. I wear the kilt as menswear, Many of the photos on this site show men wearing the kilt in a modern casual way suitable to our locales in the 21 C. They should provide encouragement and examples with your wardrobe. A balmoral or flat cap does not provide good sun protection in summer and wide brimmed hats do. Sandals without socks may be better in summer than woollen hose and brogues. All these combos can be and are worn by men who wear the kilt. You do not need to wear a belt with your kilt a sporran by itself if AOK but many like the belt as well and it is often seen but in hot weather I find it a bother and don't wear it. So be confident in your own style.

Reply to 1st; English Bloke: 1st you do, indeed wear it for your self, but you wear a kilt, et al, as a 'moving picture' of a-in this case, a casual kilt wearing fellow. It seems a courtersy that the image should be positive. To Tripleblessed; you missed an entire page of Crazy Crow FELT hats[including several FELT tops hats in colours!} To RMCool, the Stetson Hat of 1865 is nothing more than the civilian version of the old Army Hardee Hat of circa 1850-1865; which look like a Pilgrim Hat with one side turn up, to allow the musket drill to be performed. From 1861-1865, the Hardee Hat was worn with the crown pushed down, and the side brim let down. Mr. Stetson was reviving the army hat with a civilian version.
And readers: no I did not exclude the western folks dying on the plains in the hat--and ect. The quote was about the Midnight Cowboy version of the hat in the image & the one of this exchange. The Western Hatt was/is a hybrid of the Spanish & Military & Civilian hats[of the East] The hat in the 1st Image is IMHO made to look like a western hat, but I'd bet it is western china and western wal mart. That is about a "Western" hat as a French Beret is a Scots Bunnet! & for the Record, I have lived in Oklahoma, long ago, & owned 02 Real Stetsons, I never worn them after I moved back East[to the real US0- LOL]. But I do own a real South American Gaucho hat. In sum- a cheapo Midnight Cowboy Hat Is Not A Look This Writer Would Ever Wear with a Kilt[ nor espc. in Pants]!

Sounds like the moral of the story is 'Nay-sayers be damned, if you can pull off the look then you can wear it'. Good on ya!

I was requested by several ladies, some in bachelorette parties, to have my photo taken with them. One of the cheeky devils actually picked me to be part of her "treasure" hunt where she had to choose a man to kiss her (on the cheek until she turned quickly and smooched me on the lips...lol). So I'm guessing the look worked a wee bit.

I do hope you were not referring to my hats as "western china and western wal mart". I would find that extremely insulting to my Stetsons.

MizzoScotsman; NO not your hats; the one in the image, which started this argle-bargle! Question; when I was 'way out West' you could tell the US state a man was from by the cut and style of the Hat he wore- a bit like 'felt tartan!?- is that still the case?

You could have avoided 5 pages of comments if you'd said in your original post that you were thinking of wearing a cowboy hat with a kilt IN NASHVILLE.
That changes everything.

MizzouScotsman..., As one who frequently wears a very large white western straw hat with my kilt, I personally think that you have carried off "the look" nicely.
Do it again!!
