I'm in the "wear the hose or don't wear the kilt" brigade. That said, my hose is a wool/cotton blend and I've never had a problem with the heat here, up to 40 degrees Celsius (a tad over 100 degrees F) and I'm originally from the UK. The knit of the hose seems to provide an insulation layer. But that's just me, your mileage may vary!

I agree. Kilt hose have never bothered me in the heat, and I wear hose and country socks from House of Cheviot and Almost Unwearoutable (ranging from 4-8 ply).

Myself, I dont see a difference in leg warmth wearing hose. In fact with the hot Arizona 107º+ sun, I think they make a excellent insulator.

But everyones heat index is different. Maybe go to your local sporting goods store and purchase some tall athletic socks. They will complete the proper look and breath.

Normally I do not do the scrunched hose thing. I prefer garter-tied hose whether casual or dressed up fancy.

With that said, I have learned the prudence of scrunching hose in hot weather. I have a tendency to heat up easily so I sometimes do scrunch my hose (ONLY when dressed casually). Overwhelmingly, though, it's tied hose for me.

In the heat of the summer I have had good luck with sport socks [soccer and baseball] and with cotton offerings from sockdreams.

This summer, on two different particularly warm days I dressed up one day (smart daywear) and down the other (very casual w/sandals).

While I was comfortable in the sandals, I didn't care for the "look". I guess I discovered that I prefer a smart look regardless of weather.

Last two years to Chicago-mid-June Highland festivals the day temps have been "usual" Northern Illinois-swamp relentless sun-hot-humid.

Preference has been as standing/walking is a serious part of the day:

Khaki vented full-brim Tilley hat, long sleeve off-white safari shirt, 5.11 Tactical Duty Kilt in khaki, 5.11 6x6 nylon khaki pouch worn as sporran, off white kilt hose with super-thin white suport hose beneath them, top quality Rockport walking shoes.

'Will not say the days were perspiration-free, but with SPF 55 sunscreen slobbered on like a cheap wh*re's perfume, making it through the day was pleasant, if not "totally traditional."

Someone earlier used the phrase "personal heat index". I like that, and I'm going to steal it.

I'm one of those who will break into a sweat just reading a newspaper, and will generally fair better lightly dressed in cooler temps (such as the short-sleeved shirt on a 45 degree day in the mountains, as seen in my avatar.) Yet I'm generally fine with wool hose regardless of the temp. When I overheat, it tends to be the head and torso, not my lower legs, that suffer.
