I don't think it's jealousy or that he doesn't have the stones. Most comments like this come from a place of "assumed superiority". He ASSUMES that he knows more about tartans (even though the actual facts he does know may only fill the bottom of a glass) and therefore wants to feel superior to you by telling you what he "knows to be true" (which is actually false). He falls in line with the type of people who put others down to lift themselves up type mentality.

Crash: Smile to yourself now and know that he's dead wrong. You are wearing a "real tartan" and you met a "real idiot" who didn't know "real facts".

I used to have a small card taped to the wall next to the light switch in my classroom: "Never attribute to malice that which can be satisfactorily explained by sheer stupidity."

Of course stupidity can work in many directions. I have sat with a man in a Camo kilt when someone has come and asked "what tartan is that?" and given the answer is "er...its Camo, not tartan" to which the response "oh, so is that your clan then?"

Has to be one of the silliest things I have yet to hear.

Ignorance is ok and can be funny - rudeness is not.
    Best wishes - Harvey.

Sounds like the kind of jackass who sez: "MY family tartan is THOUSANDS of years old."

....I still think there should be a movie about the Sobieski-Stuart Brothers....

A response to these kind of people

Next time ask him his name. For this example we will say he is Robert. Then say, Well Robert, you have got no idea how little I care.

Its similar to when I wear my Scruffy Wallace tartan kilt from USA Kilts....and someone ask's is that your family "plaid"?.......I find myself just answering simply "yes" more and more. Less turns out to be more in cases of random people coming up and asking questions without really wanting to know anything more than a yes or a no, because as always.......the random in slack's ALWAYS knows more about wearing the kilt than you do........
    "REMEMBER!"
