The cockade stiffens the side a bit, but if you make it too stiff, it would look like a caubeen instead of a bonnet. I would not recommend it personally. And the way the US Army shapes their berets is not appealin in my opinion, either.

I think a bonnet should have a nice, soft, "slouchy" (for sake of a better word) look to it. It shouldn't look new or stiff. I have berets (I collect hats) with and without the inside stiffener, and I just like it better with out. A bonnet certainly should be without, I think.

I have pursued the choice of a lighter badge as the solution. I steer clear of those heavy pewter badges, and I even quit using my USMC badge that used the brass hat device with a pewter belt because it was just too heavy. I have fhoulnd that will diligent searching at the games, I can find lighter badges that look better.

    Just a thought.

The bonnet is nave blue, not a navy issue. I don't think the US Navy issues bonnets or berets. However, the Royal Navy does, I think.
    Quite right, Jim. Semper Fi!!!

I wear the universal Boy Scout hat badge on mine when attending Scout functions. Otherwise, its a MacLaine clan badge for me.

What... on earth... is the "universal" Boy Scout hat badge?

Given his location, I think he's referring to the Boy Scouts of America's (BSA) pewter hat badge for adults. (The original BSA fleur-de-lis & shield logo overlapping a circle, about an inch and a quarter in diameter.) Youth that choose to wear a hat pin (very rare to see a youth with a hat appropriate for pins these days - a campaign hat or one of the other brimmed hats) are supposed to wear a gold-colored 'Tenderfoot badge' pin without a circle.

I agree, hardly universal (each WOSM member organization having their own uniforming traditions, not to mention the WAGGGS organizations).

IMO, the BSA adult pin is a bit small for wearing on a Scottish bonnet, given that most clan badges are about 1/2" bigger in diameter. It also looks like an armiger's badge (a crest in a circlet) until you get close enough to see the design. That's why I choose to wear my Eagle Scout lapel pin (or NESA pin) in addition to my Clan Scott badge, when I want to wear something Scout-ish on my bonnet.

Sorry, forgot the multi-national composition of this forum.

    John is entirely correct.
