    Church Fayre

Well yesterday was one of the local churches annual bank holiday fayres. I went along with the wife, her friend and my mother .. kilted as I said I would. I have put two pictures in my personal gallery. We stayed about two hours and there were hundreds of people floating around. Many of them we knew. Not one comment was made from anybody of any age or sex about my kilt apart from one older woman who seemed a little stiff and starchy to me ... she looked at me with that disapproving look in her face and speaking down to me asked when I was going to do the Highland Fling. I said you start doing it and I'll follow you. She did'nt like that. It was a great day kilted ... I even helped to dismantle the tents from outside the church hall (as one of the pictures show). This has been quite a landmark with regard to my kilting on my own doorstep. Derek

Nice comeback to the starchy lady. I get positive feedback from polite folk, and long, cold stares from less polite folk. The interesting thing is that, when people are staring, they forget about what they look like. I'm often out with one of my friends who, when he sees someone staring at me, does a third-party stare, and then they get really sheepish realizing they got caught staring.

I think some of these people have a mixed-up idea that their disapproval carries some weight in our lives, when the truth is, we only bring 'em up in conversation when we need a good laugh.

Great piccies Derek, glad you made it and had a good time there. I wish I could have been there with you!

I find "no comment" a bit borish sometimes, it's nice to get a positive word now and then. I too have had "starchy" attitudes from some church women, that's their problem I say.

Would I be correct in saying that there is sometimes to be found a somewhat less than charitable attitude towards things Scottish by the English (or Welsh)?

It sounds from your words that the comment about the highland fling smacks of that.

Also, the poor lady's mind was probably all a-twitter wondering what you wore under the kilt. She probably resented you for making her feel that way

    Graham,

I don't think I have ever heard anything disparaging about the Scots by the English (at least not in my circle unless we're talking Football or Rugby). I can't say the reverse is true, although I'll stress it is only by a very few morons.

Well Joe that's good to hear, even in Tasmania we have a north-south rivalry that comes up from time to time.

Congradulations! It's a shame you couldn't get a picture of yourself with that women. Odd behavior from someone at a church fair, you would have thought she would of dusted off her manners and brought them allong at least on a churh function.
She may also have been upset that your legs were much better looking than hers. All in all you had a grand day out and even have a nice rebuttal under your belt.Well done!!
