    I cant'agree with your statement Rondo that a standard dirk belt and sporran will not work unless modified. Of course the sporran has to have a hodder strap, but I have a number of kilt/dirk belts with buckles (non plate types) where the hodder strap fits nicely over the buckle. The buckles also have a flat enough profile to be worn under waistcoasts. Below are a couple of pics of sporrans that have been modified from their original incarnations
    First is Figheadair's which has a MoD brass cantle. There is a photo, somewhwere on the forum, with him wearing it with a waistcoat.XMTS Figheadair's sporran.JPG

    The second is a Cragie Original where I added a hodder strap
